Jeffrey Hatcher

Jeffrey Hatcher

Jeffrey Hatcher is a playwright. He is the writer of the stage play "Compleat Female Stage Beauty", commissioned and produced by City Theatre Company in Pittsburgh PA and the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown WV, which he later adapted into a screenplay, shortened to just "Stage Beauty" (2004). He also co-wrote the stage adaptation of "Tuesdays with Morrie" with author Mitch Albom, and "Three Viewings", a comedy consisting of three monologues - each of which takes place in a funeral home. One of his most interesting works is a stage adaptation of "The Turn of the Screw", Henry James's psychological thriller.

Hatcher spent his youth in Steubenville, Ohio, a gritty Ohio River town better known for its mob connections, houses of ill repute and industrial detritus than for its literary sons and daughters. Hatcher was much influenced by a high school teacher, Glenda Dunlope, an old school thespian who ran the drama program there. He attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and later, as he migrated to New York City and ultimately to Minneapolis, he continued to draw on his home turf for inspiration.

Hatcher's most recent work is a play called "The Boys." It is set in Dublin, during the 1931 season of the Gate Theatre and it examines the relationship of Hilton Edwards, Micheál MacLiammoir, and Orson Welles. This work is still in its preliminary stages with performances amounting only to readings. The full stage release of this work is as of yet unknown.

"Armadale", a theatrical version of William Wilkie Collins' novel of the same name, written by Hatcher, opened at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater on 23 April 2008.

Other works include:
* "", 2000
* "Scotland Road", 1998 (a play about the "RMS Titanic")
* Casanova, screenplay for 2005 film (co-writer)
* "Smash (play)", 1997 (an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Novel "An Unsocial Socialist")
