Glance is an internet-based screen sharing software program produced by Arlington, Massachusetts-based Glance Networks.

Overview

According to the company’s press kit [http://www.glance.net/site/about/PressKit/GlanceBackgrounder.pdf Glance Networks press kit (pdf)] , Glance was first launched in 2002. The program is subscription based, with prices available on the company’s web site.

Technology

Glance is designed as a web-based, cross-platform remote desktop application that utilizes several levels of redundancy to avoid disconnections. These are both physical and electronic; Glance's net traffic travels through two geographically distinct colocation centers, one in Somerville, Massachusetts and another in Los Angeles. The main technologies Glance utilizes are Java and ActiveX [http://www.glance.net/site/support/faq.asp Glance.net FAQ] ; the program automatically chooses which protocol to use based on the needs and capabilities of the host system.

In addition to working within Windows and Linux environments, Glance has garnered much praise for its functionality with Mac OS-based systems [http://webworkerdaily.com/2007/01/17/glance-networks-offers-screen-sharing-for-the-rest-of-us/ Web Worker Daily - "Glance Networks Offers Screen Sharing For the Rest of Us" 1/17/2007]

It should be noted that Glance is intended for use as a screen sharing program, and not for remote access, as users must be present on both the host and target computers. During a session, however, either party can take control of the mouse.
