Paul M. English

Paul English is the cofounder and Chief Technology Officer of Kayak.com in Concord, Massachusetts. Kayak.com is a travel search engine that helps consumers find travel deals from more than 100 other travel sites. Kayak.com was named "Best of the Web" by BusinessWeek, "Best of the Web" by Forbes.com, "50 Coolest Websites" by TIME Magazine, "Best Travel Search Engine" by the Associated Press, "Best Search Aid" by Travel + Leisure Magazine and "Best of the Web" by US News & World Report.

English is also the Chief Technology Director of the Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequality (DSMHI) at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. English works for Dr. Jim Kim and Dr. Paul Farmer to lead a DSMHI teamdeveloping online communities of practice for global health workers indeveloping countries.

English is the founder of the “gethuman” movement [cite web | url = http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5024153 | title = Interview with English about GetHuman.com, November 23, 2005 | work = NPR Morning Edition | accessdate = 2008-08-14 ] to restore personal contact in customer service. The most popular part of the gethuman.com website is a database of secret phone numbers and shortcuts to reach a human at 500 major US corporations. English and the gethuman project have been featured in the New York Times.

English serves on the Development Committee of Partners In Health (PIH), a Boston-based non-profit health care organization dedicated to providing a “preferential option for the poor".

English was the President of Boston Light Software (BLS), a small business ecommerce company he co-founded in Arlington, Massachusetts in 1998. BLS was sold to Intuit in 1999, where English became Intuit’s Vice President of Technology. At Intuit, English he managed the QuickBooks web site creation and merchant account / service ecommerce development teams and he led the creation of the [http://developer.intuit.com| Intuit Developer Network] and the Intuit Innovation Lab.

English is the founder of the World Xiangqi League (WXL), an online Chinese chess community created in 1997 as a place for different cultures to meet online. The WXL had over 100,000 active members and servers in seven countries, and frequently hosted games by world renowned xiangqi masters. (English hopes to get the WXL online again at some point.)

English was a Director at Intermute from 1999 to 2005, where he led the design and development of “SpamSubtract”, a popular anti-junk-email product that was sold at retail and distributed with millions of PCs worldwide. InterMute was sold to Trend Micro in May 2005.

English previously worked in as SVP of Engineering and SVP of Product Management and Marketing at Interleaf in Waltham MA.

English worked as a software engineer at Texet Corporation (electronic publishing software) in Arlington MA, at Haemonetics (blood centrifuge device drivers) in Braintree MA, at Data General (operations research) in Westboro MA, at APC Systems (real-time data acquisition for the US Air Force) in Melrose MA, and at Individeo (sound effect development) in Woburn MA.

English received a BA in Computer Science from [http://www.cs.umb.edu| UMASS Boston] in 1987, an MS in Computer Science in 1989. English graduated from Boston Latin School in 1982. English was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1963, and has always lived in the Boston area.

English currently lectures on entrepreneurship several times a year at Boston area universities, including UMASS Boston, Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan.

English is on the product advisory board for LinkedIn, and he frequently consults for venture capital firms to evaluating startup technologies, strategies and teams.
