Built in 1894, it was designed by Bruce & Morgan. On September 18, 1980, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

From 1998 to 2000 major exterior and interior renovations were done to undo or mitigate the results of haphazard renovations over the years and to return the building to its 1914 splendor.
