Chandio

Chandio (Urdu: چانڈیو) is a Baloch tribe in the Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan provinces of Pakistan.^[1]

The clans of Chandio, the Guramani, Husnani, Aajbani, Sakhani, Qambrani, Ghaibiani, Marfani, Choliyani, Bangulani, Misrani, Alhiyarzai, Mirwani, Bhundani,mirzani,Sumarani, are known in Sindh and in Punjab. In Rahim Yar Khan the following clans are especially common: Hydrani, Sahb Khanani, Laalwani, Paisani, and Mubarkani. The name "Chandio" is derived from a tribal elder named "Chand" as given to his descendents.

Location of Chandio

This was the first Baloch tribe who had left the mountains of Balochistan, especially from Harboe (Kalat) and Dhadar (Bolan), due to disappointment of a useless and Baloch genocide war between Rind and Lashari. This tribe settled in Kohe Suleman areas of D.G Khan. The chief of the tribe at that time (1600 AD), Sardar Harian Khan Baloch established a new village in the name of his younger son, Ahmed Khan Chandio and was commonly known as Kot Ahmed Khan. This village at present is known as Kotla Ahmed Khan near Dera Ghazi Khan, and the grave of this brave Sardar is in the boundary wall of Pir Shakhi Sarwar near D.G Khan. The group migrated from Dera Ghazi Khan to mountains of Khirther. That was the region where this family lived, called Chandka region, which is in the Qambar-Shahdadkot, Larkana and Dadu districts. The family later spread throughout the Sindh and Punjab region. The Chandio tribe is now spread out over Pakistan with a concentration in Sindh. At tahsil Miro Khan distt: Qamber-Shahdadkot Village Sardar Bhanbho Khan Chandio is second oldest village of chandios this village areas are also called "Dhailaar". Junganri is one of clans of the Chandio tribe.

Origin of Chandio

Chandio origin begins from Iran, then Balochistan, and now mostly populated in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

The origins of the Chandio tribe began with a man known as Aurdghani Kurd Baloch, who migrated from Kurdistan. He had 14 sons, including one named Chand. Chand had three sons, each of whom had his own children. One of the sons called his children Leghari, but the other two chose Chand's name for their children. These were the namesakes of the famous Chandio.

This was the first Baloch tribe who left the mountains of Balochistan especially from Harboe (Kalat) and Dhadar (Bolan) due to a Baloch genocide war between Rind and Lashari. This tribe settled in Kohe Suleman areas of D.G Khan. The Grand son of Sardar Harian Khan who after completing education from Iraq accompanied and headed the tribe was Sardar Suleman Khan Chandio and famously being known as Sardar Sreman Khan Chandio who after the request of the Army Chief of Sindh Doulah Darya Khan Lashari migrated from Dera Ghazi Khan to mountains of Khirther. That region, where this family lived, was called the Chandka region, which is in the Qambar-Shahdadkot & Larkana and dadu districts. According to an old Balochi Rhyme, one brother of Chief Sardar Sareman Khan, namely Sardar Hamal Khan Chandio, resided in their oldest based village called Chandka, but nowadays known as Rojhan Mazari (old Chandka). The Last Sardar of old Chandka was Mir Maarak Khan Chandio (Mubarak Khan), lost from Chief Mazari Sardar Mir Shahali Khan, as unfortunately, Main Chandio's Comonders died in this war. The remaining Chandio tribe migrated, from their homeland, to the area of Bahawal pur State "Bhong" which also later became part of the Mazari state. Now this area was gifted to the Raees of Bhong's by the Mazari Chiefs. At that time, Sardar Mir Hyder Khan Chandio was Comonder of Chandio tribe. The Chandio tribe is now spread out over Pakistan, with a concentration in Sindh.

Sir Nawab Ghaibi Khan Chandio was also awarded the title of Nawab by Britishers, in the late 19s, by Lord Mountbatten. The British government later "disabled" the status of the Chandka region. Chandio's oldest base village is Ghaibi Dero.

Chandio in Balochistan

The majority of Chandio are in District Sibi, and the minority in Jaffar Abad, Usta Muhammad, Bolan Khuzdar karkh tehsil, Barkhan, Kohlu agency and Gawadar districts of Balochistan.

Population of Chandio

According to a survey of the Sindh Qaumi Welfare Association, the Chandio tribe has a population of over 6 million people, who live in various parts of the world. District Larkana, District Qambar, Dadu District, District Nawabshah Mirpurkhas Badin KarachiShikarpur, Sukkur and District Khairpur are the most populous vicinities of Chandio in Sindh. The Chandio community is also settled in Seraiki belt of Punjab, Pakistan like Multan and Muzaffargarh and District Layyah and District Bhakkar and Tehsil Darya Khan and in Balochistan, the Chandio tribe is settled in Sibi, Kohlu, Jaffarabad, Naseerabad, Kachhi and Tehsil Karkh District Khuzdar.

Janweri has been excluded as a sub-clan of Chandio, which established as a separate tribe.

Chandio tribe in Islamabad

According to social development societies of Sindh, there were over 10,000 Sindhis residing in Islamabad, as of 2008: Chandio tribe (700), Talpur (300), Channer (450-500), Memon, Soomro, Lashari, Hattar, Qazi, Khand, Junejo, Narejo and other tribes of Sindh (8000-9000) residing in Islamabad. The majority of Chandio tribe (residing in Islamabad) belongs to village Late Nangar Khan Chandio, (Near Mithiani), Tehsil Moro, District Naushahro Feroze . Other Chandio of District Larkana, Qambar-Shadadkot, Tando Allahyar, Dadu, Sibi, Muzaffargarh also living is Islamabad.

Leadership of Chandio

Ghaibi Khan Chandio was the Chief of Chandio. In his life, he made Sultan Ahmed Chandio as the Chief Sardar of the Chandio tribe. Later on Sardar Shabir Ahmed Khan Chandio was the Chief of Chandios, after the death of his father. Presently, Nawab Sardar Ahmed Khan Chandio is the Chief of Chandio. The 2nd leadership in Husnani Chandios is Sardar Bhanbho Khan Misrani Husnani Chandio and after his death Sardar Ghulam Rasool Khan is still sardar of Husnani chandios.
