Prince Henry of the Netherlands

Prince Henry of the Netherlands

William Frederick "Henry", Prince of the Netherlands, Prince of Orange-Nassau (Dutch: Willem Frederik "Hendrik", Prins der Nederlanden, Prins van Oranje-Nassau) (b. 13 June 1820 – d. 14 January 1879) was born at Soestdijk Palace as the third son of the Prince of Orange, later King William II of the Netherlands and the Princess of Orange, née Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia, later Queen Consort of the Netherlands.

Prince Henry became Governor of Luxembourg in 1850, in which capacity he served until his death in 1879. He married twice. On May 9, 1853, in Weimar, he married Amalia Maria da Gloria Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1830 – 1872). On August 24, 1878, in Potsdam, he married Marie Elisabeth Louise Frederica of Prussia (1855 - 1888). Both marriages were childless. At the time of his death at Walferdange Castle from measles, he was third in line of succession to the Dutch throne.

He is not to be confused with the Portuguese Prince Henry the Navigator.
