Louis DeSimone was born in
Philadelphia ,Pennsylvania , and raised in Bridgeport. He has two brothers, Russell and Salvatore, both of whom also chose ecclesiastical careers; the former is an Augustinianprofessor at thePontifical Lateran University and the latter (d. 1989) was a pastor inNew Jersey . He attended Bridgeport High School andVillanova University before becoming asergeant in the Army duringWorld War II , serving for two years inItaly with the Fifth Army Headquarters. Upon his return to theUnited States , DeSimone entered [http://www.scs.edu/ St. Charles Borromeo Seminary] in Wynnewood, and was ordained to the priesthood by onMay 10 ,1952 .He then taught at
St. Thomas More High School in Philadelphia, as well as serving as assistant pastor at St. Donato Parish in Philadelphia and at [http://www.sscosmasanddamian.com/ Ss. Cosmas and Damian Parish] in Conshohocken. He became a member of the archdiocesan Executive Committee of theCatholic Charities Appeal in 1961, pastor of Ss. Cosmas and Damian Parish in 1968, and director ofCatholic Relief Services in 1971. In 1975, DeSimone was made chairman of the Heritage Group Committee for the forty-firstInternational Eucharistic Congress , which was held in Philadelphia in August 1976. He was raised to the rank of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness during that same year. John Cardinal Krol later named him coordinator of the ItalianEarthquake Relief Fund forFriuli , his work for which earned him the "Commendatore al Merito della Repubblica Italiana" from the Italian government.He became pastor of [http://www.saintmonicaparish.net/home.html St. Monica Church] in Philadelphia in November 1976, and consultor to the Council of Managers of the Archdiocesan Office for Development in 1979. He also sat on the Board of Directors of
Pennsylvania Hospital and ofMethodist Hospital for several years, and was Vice-President of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.On
June 27 ,1981 , DeSimone was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and Titular Bishop of "Cillium" byPope John Paul II . He received his episcopal consecration on the followingAugust 12 from Cardinal Krol, with Bishops John Graham and Martin Lohmuller serving as co-consecrators, in theCathedral-Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul .In addition to his duties as an auxiliary, De Simone was named
vicar general of the Archdiocese and later chairman of the Catholic Charities Appeal in 1982. He resigned his post onApril 5 ,1997 , after fifteen years of service and reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.References
