Geoffrey VI, Count of Anjou

Geoffrey VI, Count of Anjou

Geoffrey VI (June 3, 1134, Rouen - July 27, 1158, Nantes), Count of Anjou, of Maine and Nantes from 1156 to 1158, was the son of Geoffrey V, Count of Anjou and Empress Matilda.

It was said that in his will, Geoffrey V had stipulated that his second son Geoffrey would become Count of Anjou and of Maine if his elder son Henry managed to become King of England. In the meantime, he granted Geoffrey the castles at Chinon, Loudun, Mirebeau and one other castle. The body of the count would remain unburied until Henry agreed to the terms of the will. The story was reported in contemporary sources only in a minor chronicle in Tours; W. L. Warren makes the case that the story was invented by Geoffrey. [Warren, W L, "Henry II", pgs. 45-47, Univ. of California Press, 1973 ]

In 1154, Henry acceded to the English throne. Henry had a claim to some parts of Anjou and Maine through his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. Between 1156 and his death in Nantes on July 27, 1158, Henry and Geoffrey ruled Anjou jointly.
