Harand Camp of the Theatre Arts

Harand Camp of the Theatre Arts is a summer camp located at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin and based in Evanston, Illinois.

The summer camp was founded by sisters Sulie and Pearl Harand and their husbands Byron and Sam (respectively) in 1954 on the site of the Ostoff, an old summer resort. Each of them former stage performers, the Harands used their skill of converting popular musicals into solo, female productions to rework shows to suit the needs of their students. By 1989 the camp had outgrown its facilities, and relocated to the grounds of Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Harand relocated again in 2005 to its current home on the grounds of Carthage College.

Harand Camp focuses on providing non-competitive stage experiences for children and young adults ages 8 to 18. Today the camp is led by Sulie, her daughter, Judy Friedmann-Mooney, as well as Pearl's daughter's Nora Gaffin-Shore and Janice Gaffin-Lovell. In addition to theatre, children also focus on a variety of sports including soccer, basketball and swimming. Among the many activities offered besides theatre and sports are: arts and crafts, photography, costuming, technical theatre and others.

Each summer is divided into two, three week sessions, and campers may attend one or both sessions. At their original facility, sessions were each four weeks in length, but the requirements of the academic institutions' calendars used since then forced the change.

Campers are divided by age groups into "cabins", which are generally named for famous musicals or movies. While the names have fluctuated over the years, for example "Dream Girls" replacing "Cinderella", this chart represents past several years.
