Taita (tribe)

The Taita tribe (also called Wataita) is a Kenyan tribe that is located in the Taita-Taveta District. They speak Taita which belongs to the Bantu languages. The West-Bantu moved to the area of the Taita-Taveta District first approximately in 1000-1300 A.D.N. Vogt & J. Wiesenhütter: Land use and socio-economic structure of Taita-Taveta District (S-Kenya) – Potentials and constraints (October 2000)] The Taita tribe can be divided into Wadawida who traditionally lived around the Dawida, the Wasagalla who lived around the Sagalla and the Wakasigau who lived around the Kasigau massif of the Taita Hills.

Traditionally the Taita tribe consisted of lineages (vichuku, kichuku singular). Each lineage occupied its own territorial area of the hills. Mkangi, G. C.: The Social Cost of Small Families and Land Reform. A Case Study of the Wataita of Kenya. Pergamon Press Ltd. Oxford. (1983)] These lineages were autonomous political units and before the colonialism there did not develop an idea or a consiousnes of an unified Taita tribe. Bravman, B. (1998) Making ethnic ways : Communities and their transformations in Taita,Kenya, 1800–1950. James Currey, Oxford. ]
