West Blocton is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 1,372.

Geography

West Blocton is located at coor dms|33|7|7|N|87|7|22|W|city (33.118733, -87.122875)GR|1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km²), of which, 4.7 square miles (12.2 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.42%) is water. This community is considered the terminus of the Appalachian Mountains.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,372 people, 532 households, and 389 families residing in the town. The population density was 291.7 people per square mile (112.7/km²). There were 599 housing units at an average density of 127.4/sq mi (49.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 79.74% White, 19.53% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.15% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 0.22% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 532 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 103.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,417, and the median income for a family was $38,854. Males had a median income of $31,164 versus $23,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,861. About 14.6% of families and 17.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.7% of those under age 18 and 16.0% of those age 65 or over.

*West Blocton is known for its historic beehive ovens, built in the late 1880's for coke production.
