Exclusive truth claim

Exclusive Truth Claim refers to any concept or doctrine that says the it aloneis the truth and other opinions are false. In the context of religions, this is theopposite of Universalism, in one sense of the word. (Universalism, in regard to the Universalist Church, can refer to the belief that all persons go to heaven.)

In religion

Christianity

One notable Christian church claiming exclusive possession of truth is the Church of Christ, founded by Alexander Campbell. It is common among its membership to believe that all others, including all other Christians, will go to Hell, no matter how righteous or pious they might be.

Hindu

In the post-modern period Hinduism is generally known to be Universalist and acceptsall other religions to be true and valid. Mahatma Gandhi is credited to be the original proponen. However, this seems to be true from asocio-political perspective, since Hinduism itself is a congregation of large numberof individual sects and peoples and for long have lived in harmony among themselveswithout persecuting each other. But if one goes into what is in the scriptures ofmore organized Hindu sects like Vedanta, we do find exclusive truth claims.Bhagavad Gita says -

"ye me matamidaM nityamanutishhThanti maanavaaH .
""shraddhaavanto.anasuuyanto muchyante te.api karmabhiH .. 3.31"

Those who continuously practice what I preach they will be freed from Karma.

"ye tvetadabhyasuuyanto naanutishhThanti me matam.h .
""sarvaGYaanavimuuDhaa.nstaanviddhi nashhTaanachetasaH .. 3.32"

Those who scoff at what I preach and do not follow in faith know them to beignorant fools and destined for destruction.

Traditionally Hinduism (more specifically Vedanta) considers itself to beeternal religion (Sanatana Dharma) and thus is the only true religion and religionswhich have origin in a person or persons to be untrustable on account ofunknowability of the person's knowledge and ability and thus patently false.
