The 19th Congressional District of Illinois encompasses a large stretch of rural Southern Illinois, part of Springfield and the outer St. Louis suburbs. It has been represented by Republican John Shimkus since 1997.

The district voted 61%-39% for George W. Bush in 2004. The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index score of R +8.
