Avondale Shipyard was an independent
shipbuilding company, acquired byLitton Industries , in turn acquired byNorthrop Grumman Corporation. Now, along with the formerIngalls Shipbuilding , the yard is known asNorthrop Grumman Ship Systems . The yard is located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles upriver fromNew Orleans ,Louisiana nearWestwego, Louisiana . It was the site of the modernization of the USS|Iowa|BB-61|6 in the early 1980s and also constructed some of thelighter aboard ship (LASH) ships. At one time, it was the largest employer in the state of Louisiana with about 26,000 employees.Ships built
