Kadnikov

Kadnikov

Kadnikov ( _ru. Ка́дников) is a town in Sokolsky District of Vologda Oblast, Russia. It is situated on the bank of the Sodima River, 43 km south-east of Vologda. Population: 5,100 (2005 est.); 5,362 (2002 Census).

The town traces its history to 1492, when a patrol station was set up to protect the trade route from Moscow northward. The village of Kadnikovskaya ( _ru. Кадниковская) gradually became the largest settlement in the district and was incorporated as a town in 1780. In the 20th century, the population of Kadnikov has declined as that of neighbouring Sokol (12 km to the north-west) has grown.

A historical interest attaches to Ilyinsky pogost, comprising a 17th-century five-domed church, a belfry, and a fenced burial ground. This lovely complex is located several miles away from the town ( [http://p.vtourist.com/2256128-Ilinsky_Pogost_Kadnikov-Kadnikov.jpgpicture] ).
