Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau

Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau

Friedrich Wilhelm Zachau (November 14, 1663 - August 7, 1712) was a German musician and composer. He was George Frideric Handel's first music teacher and organist at Halle's Church of Our Lady. He taught Handel how to play the violin, organ, oboe, and harpsichord, as well as how to compose music. Zachau's teaching was so effective, that in 1702 at the age of seventeen, Handel took over his teachers position as organist at Halle's. It is said that after Friederich Wilhem died in 1712, Handel became a benefactor to Zachau's widow and children in gratitude for his teacher's instruction.
