The right-hander was signed by the Atlanta Braves as an amateur free agent, (April 1, 1981) and later drafted by the Cleveland Indians from the Braves in the 1983 rule V draft. (December 5, 1983) One of only eight Scotland natives to ever be a major league ballplayer, he pitched for the Indians from 1984 to 1985, and again in 1987. Sitting out 1986 on the disabled list.

The majority of his 113 appearances was as a relief pitcher, but he did start 9 games.

Career highlights include:
*set an Indians rookie record with 58 relief appearances in 1984
*3.1 innings of no-hit shutout relief against the Baltimore Orioles to earn a save (July 28, 1984)
*5.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run and striking out 5, to earn the W against the Toronto Blue Jays (August 16, 1984)
*a 7-hit complete game win over All-Star Dave Stieb and the Toronto Blue Jays (August 19, 1985)
*held All-Stars Tony Armas, Damaso Garcia, Chet Lemon, Lance Parrish, and Alan Trammell to a .152 collective batting average (10-for-66)
*held Hall of Famers Kirby Puckett, Dave Winfield, and Robin Yount to a .091 collective batting average (2-for-22)

Waddell had shoulder surgery in September 1985 and was unsuccessful in a brief 1987 comeback bid.

He finished his career with a total of 15 wins, 11 losses, 15 saves, 56 games finished, and an ERA of 4.30.
