McMorris, then 35 years old with 10 years of state House experience behind her, ran for the seat five-term Republican Rep. George Nethercutt left open for a failed Senate bid against Patty Murray. Democratic strategists initially touted their candidate for that race, well-known Spokane developer Don Barbieri, as a strong contender. But McMorris, after winning a tough three-way Republican primary by a wide margin, trounced Barbieri by 59.7 percent to 40.3 percent.
