As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 31,223 and a density of 263.93 persons per km². The total area is 118.30 km².

The city was founded on November 3, 1958.

Ōkunoshima, the island where a poison gas plant of the Imperial Japanese Army was located, belongs to Takehara.
