PHPSlash

PHPSlash

PHPSlash is a content management system system written in PHP. It was originally a port from the Perl code of Slash-0.2 (the code that runs the popular slashdot web site) to PHP version 3 and "PHPlib", a now obsolete system for extending HTML templating to the PHP language. ("See Web template system.") However, after development the PHPSlash code was changed into an entirely new system of PHP weblog coding.

The project has been hosted on SourceForge.net since 2000-08-29. The current version of the software, 0.8.1.1, was released on January 15, 2006 under the GPL. The companion domain / project community site, "PHPslash.org" [ [http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=720&group_id=10566 About PHPSlash] on SourceForge.net] , has been abandoned (as of 2008-07-18.)

Name

The project is generally referred to as PHPSlash. However, the SourceForge project itself is named using a lower-case "php", as "phpSlash", which is also the case convention used in the domain name registration for the project community "phpSlash.org". However, the project documentation uses the capitalized "PHP" convention "PHPSlash".

Related programs

Similar programs and projects include PHP-Nuke, Slash, PHPweblog, Thatware, Sips, and NewsPro. The idea behind these software packages is to provide webmasters with flexible template-driven websites that are easy to update. Most have features supporting document content management ("See: Web content management system.") which allows non-technical authors to conveniently edit webpage content--not unlike Wikipedia.
