Great Wilne

Great Wilne

Great Wilne is a small village in Derbyshire, England on the border with Leicestershire. It is 7 miles south east of Derby. It is a village split from its church of St Chads by the river. The church is at the very small hamlet of Church Wilne which can only be approached by a short walk over the bridge of the river derwent or a fair car journey which necessitates travelling out of the county.

History

Wilne is mentioned in the Domesday book as one village in 1086.

Church Wilne

Church Wilne is registered as an abandoned village, apart from the church however it is the location of "St Chad's water". This water was purchased by Draycott district council where it is a nature reserve and a haven for water sports [ [www.churchwilne.co.uk/ Skiing at hurch Wilne] ] .
