Wachenheim is a municipality on the German Wine Route in the district of Bad Dürkheim, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Its population is 5,000. It is situated on the eastern edge of the Palatinate forest, approx. 1 km south of Bad Dürkheim and 20 km west of Ludwigshafen. It is well known for its wine or "Sekt"(sparkling wine) production. Its location is 49° 27' N and 8° 11' E. Its elevation is 105 m.

History

Early traces of settlers in region around Wachenheim have been dated to the Iron Age (550 B.C. to 0 A.D.). At this time, Celts had been living in the area of the Upper Rhine Valley. At around 60 B.C., Germanic tribes, probably Nemeter, pushed into this region and drove out the Celts. As clashed between these two tribes were ongoing, the Romans defeated the Nemeter after conquering Ariovist and came to control the region for the next 400 years. As a result of the Roman influence, agricultural practises improved and the growing of fruits and wine began. A roman street is said to have gone through the Wachenheim region, from Mußbach along the Haardt through Rheinhessen up to Bingen.

After the Huns fell into the region, Alemmanen pushed in around 450 A.D. put were driven away again by the Francs in the 5th century.

Wachenheim Castle

Wachenheim Castle, or Balcony of Palatine, was created in the 11th or 12th Century. From its peak, you can see the Rhine Valley, Odenwald Forest and, on a clear day, the Black Forest.
