"Jacksonville City Nights" is Ryan Adams' seventh official album. Like its predecessor "Cold Roses", it is attributed to Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. The album is the second in a trilogy of albums released in a seven-month timespan. The album was released on September 27, 2005 in the United States and September 26, 2005 in the rest of the world, and has sold 100,000 copies in the United States and 158,000 worldwide (according to Q Magazine, September 2007, Page 63). "Jacksonville City Nights" has moved 100,000, and "29" has shifted 81,000. ] The album was recorded live in the studio, without overdubs. The title is most likely a reference to Adams' hometown of Jacksonville, North Carolina which has been referenced throughout his career, both solo and while involved in bands. The Cardinals also share the name of the mascot of Jacksonville High School, which Adams attended.

Several limited American releases contained a DVD entitled "September" (which was originally intended to be the title of the album), which featured a 20 minute documentary about the band on the road and in the studio. Bonus tracks were issued to the many non-US countries. In the United Kingdom, the album was released with "Jeane" and "Always on My Mind," the song first recorded by Brenda Lee, made famous by Elvis Presley and then covered again by Willie Nelson. The rest of Europe got "Always On My Mind" and Japan got "Jeane," "Always On My Mind" and "What Sin Replaces Love." The vinyl version of this record included "A Kiss Before I Go," "Jeane," "Always on My Mind" and "I Still Miss Someone," a Johnny Cash cover.

Bass player Catherine Popper is featured in the photograph on the album cover.
