Mount Lassell

Mount Lassell

Mount Lassell (71°45′S 68°50′W / 71.75°S 68.833°W / -71.75; -68.833) is a snow-covered peak, 1,000 m, overlooking the head of Neptune Glacier in the southeast part of Alexander Island. The peak appears to have been first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. Remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for William Lassell (1799–1880), English astronomer who discovered Umbriel and Ariel, satellites of Uranus, and Triton, satellite of Neptune.
