Dr. Tanzil Haider Usmani is a Pakistani chemist and the current chairman of the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR). A research scientist in the field of chemistry, Usmani had made original contribution in the field of chemistry and has been associated with Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research since his college years. Currently, he was the Director General of Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Karachi Laboratories, he has assumed this position since 2004 to 2010.[1]

Early life

Born in 1949 in Rawalpindi Pakistan to Mehmood-ul-Hassan Usmani and Raheela Usmani, Tanzil attended early school in the garrison city and later attended Punjab University Lahore where he completed his B.Sc, M.Sc from Punjab University, and a Ph.D in Chemistry, writing his thesis on Preparation and Characterization of Activated Carbon from Rice Husk, Acacia Arabia, and Low Rank Coal, under the supervision of Dr. Fasihulla, from the Applied Chemistry Department (ACD) at the Karachi University in 2001. He completed and carried out his research at the Hussain Ebrahim Jamal Research Institute of Chemistry, and the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. After his doctorate in chemistry, he joined PCSIR upon his uncle's advice.

In 2001, while working with PCSIR, Tanzil submitted his thesis (Preparation and Characterization of Activated Carbon from Rice Husk, Acacia Arabica and Low Rank Coals) for Doctorate in Philosophy from University of Karachi and garnered praise all over.[2] His name was entered in Marques Who's Who for his contributions to Science and Engineering. Following this in 2004, Dr. Tanzil Haider Usmani was promoted to the rank of Director General, Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Karachi Laboratories. There are also chances that he may be promoted to the rank of Chairman PCSIR.[3]

Personal life

Dr. Tanzil is married, and is a father of two girls. His wife Ms. Taj Usmani is an Assistant Professor in a girls’ college in Karachi. Both of his daughters are married. His eldest daughter, Sahar Saad is married to Saad Qureshi and they live in Karachi Pakistan and his youngest daughter, who is a medical doctor from Sindh Medical College, Dr. Fariha Usmani is married to Salman Khan and they both reside in London, England. Dr. Tanzil currently resides in Gulistan - e - Jauhar, Karachi.
