Treschow

Treschow

Treschow is a Danish-Norwegian family of industrialists (since the 19th century), which was ennobled by letters patent by the Danish king in 1812. The family can be traced back to "Rasmus Nielsen Træskomager" (died 1633), and the family name means "wooden shoe-maker", the profession of its ancestor.

It is unrelated to the old German noble family of Tresckow. The family changed the spelling of its family name to a spelling very similar to the German noble family, and also started using a coat of arms which is nearly identical, in the early 19th century. For comparison, "Træskomager" is the modern Danish spelling of "wooden shoe-maker", while the modern Norwegian spelling would be "Treskomaker".
