History

Miss Universo Italia was created in 2005. Maria Teresa Francville had already won the right to represent Italy that year by virtue of winning The Miss for Miss Universe, the pageant that selected the Italian delegate to Miss Universe between 2000 and 2004; when that pageant lost the franchise and was discontinued, she entered the newly created Miss Universo Italia competition and won again. The most noted winner of the Miss Universo Italia pageant is Claudia Ferraris, who finished 9th at Miss Universe 2008. Before her, the last Italian delegate to advance to the Miss Universe semifinals was Denny Mendez in 1997, marking a gap of 11 years for Italy between the last two placements.
