Red fist

The red fist is a visual meme typically associated with socialism, communism, and also, anarchism. It is widely considered a graphical representation of the raised fist salute, and is often incorporated into working class iconography related to equality, unionism, worker's rights, proletarian struggle, and revolution. In a similar line of party identification, the red star is typically associated with Revolutionary Socialism.

Symbol

The fist may represent union (as "many weak fingers can come together to create a strong fist") and is also used to express solidarity, generally with oppressed peoples. This symbolism may have sprung from usage by trade unions.

The fist also represents power (as in "with an iron fist") or strength; the color, red, represents socialism. This is due to the many Socialist and Communist political bodies that have historically used red (blood-red) colored flags and banners.

Other uses

Loyalists in Northern Ireland often use a red clenched fist on murals depicting the Red Hand of Ulster.
