Elda Panopoulou

Elda Panopoulou

Elda Panopoulou is a Greek comedian, best known for her role as Haroula Peponaki in the Greek sitcom "To Retire".

Early life

Panopoulou was born in Athens in early the 1960s. Her two parents were teachers; they owned their own school.

Career

Her first appearance was in a Greek romance series, titled Alithines Istories, alongside Giorgos Kimoulis and Martha Karagianni in 1984. The ratings were low and after 6 episodes it was cancelled. Her next move was to play in a movie that was released directly for VHS; something very popular in Greece at that time. The title of the movie was Ellas Katopin...Aortis and it was written and directed by Lakis Lazopoulos. During the filming of this movie she met her future husband Jerry, an Italian.

In 1990 she was casted for a new Greek sitcom, "To Retire". She played the nervous secretary Haroula Peponaki. That role made her a big comedian star and opened the doors for her to play in big theatres. Panopoulou's career was successful, but her personal life was suffering. A few years later she and Jerry got a divorce.

In 1992 right after To Retire was over, Panopoulou starred in a new sitcom for the Greek channel ANT1. The title was Sigatoikoi Stin Trella with Katerina Gioulaki also starring. The plot was about 4 people; a mother and her forty something son (Gioulaki and Pavlos Haikalis) and two siblings (Panopoulou and Takis Papamathaiou) fighting over an apartment. That was a minor hit, but it was enough for Panopoulou to continue starring in big theatres.

In 1993, she had a great opportunity. She was casted for a minor role in Michael Kakoyannis new film, "Pano Kato kai Plagios" alongside Irene Papas and Panos Mihalopoulos.

In 1996, she and her friend Sophia Vossou co hosted the morning show Metaxi Mas for Mega. That was very successful and it last for 3 seasons. After that she hosted a talk show for the Greek public television.

Panopoulou starred in two more series; An Thimitheis sto Oneiro mou and Jenny kai Evanthia. Both of them were failures and since 2004 she has not acted on television. She dedicated herself to comedy theatre and a few years ago she created her very own theatre school.

In 2007, she did a guest appearance on the popular Greek sitcom To Kokkino Domatio, aired on Mega.
