August 23 ,1941 inWrexham ) is a Welsh former footballer who played as amidfielder .He made his Wrexham debut in 1959, and moved to Arsenal in February 1961 for £15,000. He made his debut in a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers on
April 22 1961 . He broke through intermittently in the 1961-62 season, making 14 league appearances as an attacking midfiielder, scoring twice. Unable to maintain a first-team place, Griffiths returned to Wrexham in September 1962. He gave many years of service to Wrexham, in the team's midfield during which the club enjoyed spells in the Third Division as well as a run to the quarter-finals of theUEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1976. He became manager a year later after John Neal moved to Middlesbrough and guided Wrexham to promotion.Griffiths retired from playing in 1979 but remained manager until 1981, preserving Wrexham's Second Division status during this period. After leaving Wrexham he managed
Crewe Alexandra for a short time. He also won 17 caps for Wales and was awarded the MBE for services to football.References
