Pablo Escobar , the wealthiest and possibly the most ruthless criminal of recent times. They met in1982 , when the drug baron was a deputy congressman, and they became romantically involved in January1983 . After Escobar's first interview for national television in Virginia Vallejo's Al Ataque!, he began to be known as “the ColombianRobin Hood ” for the charitable work ofMedellín sin Tugurios (Medellín without Slums), his foundation with the leading members of what would be later known as the Medellín Cocaine Cartel. During five years Virginia Vallejo becamePablo Escobar 's witness of choice for many key events of his life. Although the relationship ended in late1987 , when he told her that he would go into a full-blown war with theCali Cartel and the Colombian State, he forced her to remain inColombia . All her efforts to stop the war were useless.Multilevel Marketing Diamond
After
Pablo Escobar ’s death in1993 , Virginia Vallejo was blacklisted. In late1995 she began her activity in themultilevel marketing industry. As the founding distributor for the Colombian and South American operation of Neways International of Salem and Springville,Utah , she became the first Colombianmultilevel marketing Diamond in1997 . In1998 , at the Opryland Convention Center inNashville ,Tennessee , she was awarded the President’s Cup among almost one million Neways distributors worldwide, but four months later her contract was cancelled and her network of 30.000 Colombians rolled-up to the owners of the company inUtah . In the course of a lawsuit introduced in a [http://procesos.ramajudicial.gov.co/prueba/consultap.aspx Colombian court] in January1999 , the defendants fled the country and judicial experts reported the incineration of 14.108 documents, massive adulteration of accounting evidence and the disappearance of 18 books from the court.Trial against Alberto Santofimio
In July
2006 , former senatorAlberto Santofimio –Pablo Escobar ’s link to the élite of the Colombian political class and his choice for president in1986 -1990 - was on trial for conspiracy in the assassination of presidential candidateLuis Carlos Galán , committed by Escobar in1989 . Virginia Vallejo offered her testimony to the Colombian Attorney General, but the judge of the case closed it two days later. OnJuly 18th ,2006 Virginia Vallejo arrived inMiami in a special flight of the Drug Enforcement Administration. The official statement of the American Embassy in Bogotá read: “Today, for safety and security reasons, we have escorted Ms. Virginia Vallejo to the United States, where her cooperation is sought in ongoing drug investigations”.Testimony against the Colombian political class
On July 24th, 2006, a video that Virginia Vallejo had taped on the event that she was killed for offering to testify against Santofimio was aired on television with a 58 per cent rating and a fourteen million audience. She claimed that, in the mid eighties and in her presence, Santofimio had instigated her lover [http://www.virginiavallejo.com/mp3.html to eliminate senator Galán] at least on three occasions. The polls gave her a 78% credibility.
In September 2006 the [http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2006/September/06_crm_646.html Rodríguez-Orejuela brothers] pleaded guilty without going to trial; they were given thirty years and their frozen 2.1 billion dollar fortune was split between the Governments of the United States and Colombia. In [http://www.amandoapablo.com Amando a Pablo, odiando a Escobar] (Random House Mondadori 2007, [http://www.lovingpablo.com Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar] 2009), the Colombian journalist describes her lover’s rise and downfall, the events that she witnessed during the five years that the stormy relationship lasted and Escobar’s role in Colombian historic tragedies like the 1985
Palace of Justice siege . The book mentions the links of the drug trade to PresidentsAlfonso López Michelsen ,Ernesto Samper andÁlvaro Uribe , Caribbean dictators, the Sandinista Junta and the Cuban Government, and the Colombian military and enforcement agencies. Vallejo explains howPablo Escobar manipulated the criminal Justice system and the Press, the reasons behind the murders of one Colombian justice minister and four presidential candidates, the origins of Escobar’s feud with theCali Cartel , the threats she endured during the years of narco-terrorism and the chain of events that led to her cooperation with Interpol and [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0CE3DA1E3AF930A35751C1A965958260&sec=&spon=&&scp=3&sq=pablo%20escobar%20killed&st=cse Escobar’s death] in December1993 .Reaction of President Alvaro Uribe to claims of ties to Escobar
In her book, Vallejo claims that Escobar and his partners made substantial contributions to the Colombian presidential campaign of 1982, in which former President
Alfonso López Michelsen lost toBelisario Betancur . She also states that the explosive growth of the drug industry in the early 1980s, which turned Escobar and his partners into overnight billionaires, was based on the licenses for private landing strips, airplanes and helicopters granted byAlvaro Uribe to the drug lords in 1980 -1982 when he headed the [http://web.presidencia.gov.co/sp/2007/octubre/16/07162007.html Colombian Civil Aviation Agency] .President Uribe sharply denied Virginia Vallejo’s claims [ [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E07E3DE113EF930A35753C1A9619C8B63&sec=&spon= Virginia Vallejo’s claims ] ] and [http://www.cpj.org/news/2007/americas/colombia03oct07na.html accused the correspondent of El Nuevo Herald] in Colombia, who had interviewed her for the front page article of the newspaper on [http://www.virginiavallejo.com/primerapagina.html July 16th 2006] - of being behind her book. Pablo Escobar “many times, due to his political visibility, but from afar”, and Virginia Vallejo “only once, in an airport”, and visiting Escobar’s wife in 1991 “only to plead for the surrender of her terrorist husband’. Coronell - who had also been forced into exile in 2005 - exhibited in his column in Semana magazine the front page of El Mundo ofMedellín of June 15,1983 [ [http://redresistencia.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=250&Itemid=50 Article El Mundo of Medellín June 15, 1983 ] ] which confirmed another of Virginia Vallejo’s claims: though it could not land due to bad weather, “a modern helicopter belonging to rancher Pablo Escobar had been sent to recover the body of Mr. Alberto Uribe-Sierra” - President Uribe’s father - from their ranch toMedellín after he was murdered in 1983 by the rebel FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) in an attempt to kidnap him and his son Santiago. Medellín without Slums, added Coronell, had also posted large ads on the front page of El Mundo inviting to Mr. Uribe’s funeral. Political asylum case
Two weeks after Virginia Vallejo's arrival in Miami, Revista Cambio, Agencia EFE of Spain, AFP of France and RCN Radio accused the former anchor woman of “fleeing to Cuba to escape the Colombian justice system after lying to the American Government”. El Nuevo Herald posted the story on its front page on September 5, 2006 and every station in Florida quoted the international news agencies. Virginia Vallejo had not left the USA since her arrival in Miami, but the international agencies refused to correct the false information. Cambio magazine is owned by Casa Editorial
El Tiempo , where major stockholders are the family of the Colombian Vice President Francisco Santos and the Minister of Defense Juan Manuel Santos, in charge of the distribution of four billion dollars in American aid toColombia .In October
2006 , Virginia Vallejo filed for political asylum in theUnited States of America . In November2007 Amando a Pablo, odiando a Escobar became the # 1 bestseller in Spanish in the USA and other countries.Testimony in the Palace of Justice case
On July 11th 2008 Virginia Vallejo testified during five hours in the case of the Palace of Justice siege, committed by the M-19 rebel group in November 1985. She confirmed that, to prevent his extradition to the USA, Pablo Escobar paid two million dollars in cash, arms and explosives to the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19th_of_April_Movement#cite_note-1 M-19] top commanders Iván Marino Ospina and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Pizarro_Leong%C3%B3mez Álvaro Fayad] to steal his criminal records from the building. She described Escobar’s meeting with Ospina, in which she was present, ten days before the latter’s death in August 1985. Also, her 1986 conversation with Escobar on the methods used by [http://www.fiscalia.gov.co/PAG/DIVULGA/noticias2006/fiscalmario/FgPalacioNov15.htm Colonel Edilberto Sanchez Rubiano] to torture the survivors of the siege to obtain information on the hiding place of the guerrilla commanders and seven million dollars that he had allegedly [http://colombiasupport.net/news/2007/11/disappeared-at-palace-of-justice.html paid them] . Vallejo also accused Military Intelligence of providing the badges used by the 18 hitmen who committed the assassination of the presidential candidate
Luis Carlos Galán in 1989. She confirmed that the B2 andGonzalo Rodríguez Gacha , alias “the Mexican” and Escobar’s associate in theMedellín Cartel , had murdered hundreds of activists of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriotic_Union_(Colombia) Unión Patriótica party] , including its presidential candidatesJaime Pardo Leal andBernardo Jaramillo Ossa .The former anchor woman denounced Felipe López-Caballero, a son of the deceased president
Alfonso López and publisher of Semana magazine, for orchestrating a vicious defamation campaign against her, in order to destroy her credibility as a witness and protect the assets of [http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/elpais/1-59382-2005-11-18.html Maria Isabel Santos-Caballero] , Pablo Escobar’s widow. She presented evidence of how López-Caballero’s magazine, its director Alejandro Santos - a cousin of the Colombian Vice-President and the Defense Minister - and columnist Antonio Caballero harassed her and had destroyed her reputation to use her image for the promotion of sexual tourism.Vallejo also denounced
Juan Gossaín , director of RCN Radio and husband of her former partner Margot Ricci, of conspiracy with convicted narco-terrorist Roberto Escobar-Gaviria - now free on parole - to present her like a liar and a madwoman in order to promote the interests of Pablo Escobar’s brother and his cousin [http://colombia.indymedia.org/news/2008/03/82932.php José Obdulio Gaviria] , the Colombian Presidential Advisor. Vallejo presented evidence of how Gossaín and several journalists of RCN had edited a video and an interview to frame her with complicity in the assassination of senator Galán, committed by Escobar’s hitmen in 1989, when she was living in Europe and cooperating with Interpol. In October 2007, Colombian Inspector General Edgardo Maya [ [http://www.defensahumanidad.cult.cu/artic.php?item=4569 Procurador pide extradición de Virginia Vallejo ] ] and former Attorney GeneralAlfonso Gómez - both close collaborators of presidents Alfonso López and Ernesto Samper - demanded Vallejo’s extradition from the USA to Colombia to be charged with conspiracy in Escobar’s crimes. In front of a camera, Vallejo asked Colombian Attorney General Mario Iguarán to open investigation of all her commercial and professional activities and her private life. She offered to return to Colombia with Fiscal Ángela Buitrago, head of the Palace of Justice prosecution, to face charges for all the accusations made against her by the Colombian media, their correspondents in the USA and international news agencies. She also offered her cooperation and testimony to the victims of narco terrorism who, individually or collectively, wished to file civil lawsuits.References
