Crystalox was established as a private limited company in
1982 in the town ofWantage inOxfordshire specialising in the design and manufacture of equipment forpurification andcrystal growth ofmetals ,alloys ,semiconductors andelectro-optic materials. In1990 the company started their pioneering development of industrial production systems fordirectional solidification of multicrystalline silicon for thesolar cell industry. In
1994 , there was a management buy-out by 6 senior managers.1997 saw the incorporation of PV Silicon AG inErfurt ,Germany , a specialist silicon wafer producer. A strategic partnership was formed between Crystalox and PV Silicon in1999 , which progressed to the merging of the two companies in2002 and the incorporation of PV Crystalox AG. In2006 , the decision was taken to build a silicon production plant in Germany.cite web|title=History|publisher=PV Crystalox Solar plc|url=http://www.crystalox.com/History.html|accessdate=2008-05-19]In June

The company's industrial focus comprises the production of the high-purity polysilicon raw material, melting and crystallization of the silicon to form
ingot s, and converting the ingots into thinwafer s.These wafers are then sold to the
photovoltaics industry, where these wafers are then transformed intosolar cells using semiconductor processing technology, linked together in strings and laminated between glass and plastic sheets to form durable modules.Future developments
In order to complement externally contracted supplies of
polysilicon , the company has begun construction of its own polysilicon production facility inBitterfeld ,Germany .cite web|title=Corporate strategy|publisher=PV Crystalox Solar plc|url=http://www.crystalox.com/Strategy.html|accessdate=2008-05-19] Commercial production will start in2009 , with a projected output of 900MT in the first year of operation, increasing to 1800MT in2011 .References
