Tribone has been written about by authors such as
Robert H. Waterman , author of "What America Does Right". [http://books.google.com/books?id=T1-RRvYT8qoC&pg=PA29&lpg=PA29&dq=what+america+does+right,+tribone&source=web&ots=PHGCQRapWP&sig=FRMA92hQyiVXkk3vWouQCr5lx_s&hl=en#PPA30,M1] Waterman has written of Tribone:But Tom Tribone is one of those people who resist the "status quo". He has a large chunk of what I call the "Columbo" factor: Like Detective Columbo on the old television show, if something doesn't make sense, Tribone asks why and keeps asking until he gets an answer that does make sense. In this case, what didn't make sense was the plant's output pattern. It ran twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and it had its good days and bad, but it almost always did better on weekends. During a good weekend, in fact, the productivity rate came very close to the plant's 3 million pounds per month capacity.
To Tribone, this was an amazing statistic -- the weekend blip. What was it about weekends? The conclusion was inescapable. The plant did better -- two times better -- when he wasn't around. Once he learned this the plant began setting production records. "The most effective direction I could give my people was simply to log the orders that came to the plant and convey that data," Tribone says. "These folks knew how to run the plant. If they knew what the customer wanted, and didn't have too much interference from me, they got it done."
In
Robert M. Grant 's case study, "AES Corporation: Rewriting the Rules of Management," [http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/grant/docs/17AES.pdf] Grant relayed a quotation put forth by Tom Tribone on the subject of teams and corporate motivations:"Teams imply friendship; not only the ability but the desire to work together. Starting with the wonderful example set by the original AES team, Roger and Dennis, working together in small groups has been a natural way to get big things done while preserving the dignity of each person."
