GWR 5101 Class

The Great Western Railway (GWR) 5101 Class or Large Prairie is a class of 2-6-2T steam locomotives. These locomotives were medium-sized tank engines designed for stopping passenger work. As such they were to be found all over the Great Western Railway system. The original design was by G. J. Churchward in 1903 as the '31XX' Class & thus was later modified by C. B. Collett. No.4115 was one of the later locomotives being turned out by Swindon Works in October 1936. It spent most of its working life in the Birmingham area but was based for a time at Croes Newydd Shed at Wrexham before being withdrawn from service in June 1965. They were designed for passenger work and were a development of the earlier 3100 Class.

Preservation

Ten have been preserved, these are 4110, 4115, 4121, 4141, 4144, 4150, 4160, 5164, 5193 and 5199. One of these, 5193, has been rebuilt by the West Somerset Railway into a 2-6-0 resembling the 4300 Class, and numbered 9351.Out of the ten surviving 5101's seven came from Barry Scrapyard

*4141 is currently operational at the Great Central Railway

*4150 is currently awaiting overhaul at the Severn Valley Railway
*4160 is currently operational at the West Somerset Railway
*5164 is currently operational at the Severn Valley Railway
*5199 is currently operational at the Llangollen Railway On loan at the Bluebell Railway for a year.
