19th century

* 1831 – Matthias W. Baldwin displays a model steam locomotive at the Philadelphia City Museum a year before building his first full-size locomotive for a working railroad.
* 1831 – The New York and Harlem Railroad is incorporated.

20th century

* 1937 – Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's "Royal Blue" passenger train is re-equipped with cars rebuilt in the B&O's company shops.
* 1946 – The "Exposition Flyer", travelling at 80 mph (130 km/h), runs into a stationary train in Naperville, Illinois, killing 45 and injuring 36.
* 1983 – Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad discontinues independent intercity passenger train service with the final run of the "Rio Grande Zephyr".
* 1997 – Construction begins on Phase II of Manchester Metrolink in Manchester, England.

21st century

* 2004 – Amtrak discontinues the Chicago-Toronto "International".
* 2005 – A JR West commuter train derails and strikes an apartment building in Amagasaki, Hyogo, Japan, killing 106 and injuring more than 460 others; see Amagasaki rail crash.

* 1853 – John Frank Stevens, chief engineer and general manager of Great Northern Railway, vice president Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (d. 1943).

* 1970 – Oliver Bulleid, chief mechanical engineer of Southern Railway in Great Britain 1937-1948 (b. 1882).
