Invalidenstraße

The Invalidenstraße is a street in Berlin,Germany. It runs east to west for 3 kilometers throught the neighbourhoods of Moabit and Mitte. Along this street, were three important railway stations: the Stettiner Bahnhof, the Hamburger Bahnhof and Lehrter Bahnhof.

Several public institution and federal ministries are situated along the street. Towards the east, are the Invalidenpark, the Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, the Museum of Natural History and the faculties of agriculture and horticulture of to the Humboldt University of Berlin.

History

The street was built in the 13th Century and was originally named Spandauer Heerweg. Its current name comes from the name of the Frederick II of Prussia's residence, the Invalidenhaus. From 1748, this residence served the veterans that fought in the First Silesian War and Second Silesian War. Today the remaining parts of this building house offices for the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The Ulanenkaserne ("Uhlan's barracks") are also situated on Invalidenstraße.

The Invalidenstraße was once one of the border crossings from West Berlin into the GDR. After German reunification, it has became one of the most important road networks in Berlin, particularly after the opening of the new Berlin Hauptbahnhof.
