Res Fischer (
November 8 ,1896 ,Berlin -October 4 ,1974 ,Stuttgart ) was one of the few true Germancontralto of the 1930s and 1940s, and was one of the most powerful singing-actresses of her day.Born Maria Theresa Fischer, she studied in
Berlin with the great sopranoLilli Lehmann , and later inStuttgart andPrague . She made her debut in 1927 at theBasel Stadttheatre, and remained there until 1935. She then sang inFrankfurt (1935-41), and joined theStuttgart Opera in 1941.After the war, she began appearing at the
Munich State Opera , theVienna State Opera , atLa Scala in Milan, atLa Monnaie in Brussels, theRoyal Opera House in London, theSan Carlo in Naples, and in 1951 at theTeatro Colon in Buenos Aires.Her repertory included;
Gluck 's Orfeo, Azucena, Amneris, Eboli, Ortrud, Fricka, Brangane, Die Amme, Herodias, Clytemnestra, |The old Countess, Kostelnicka, Jocasta, The Gingerbread Witch, etc. She created the title role inCarl Orff 's "Antigonae " at theSalzburg Festival in 1949.Fischer enjoyed a long and distinguished career, singing until 1965.
