Flavio Alves

Flavio Alves (b. November 30, 1969 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), is a writer and formerly a corporal in the Brazilian navy. Alves attended Columbia University where he earned an undergraduate degree in Political Science. He was granted political asylum in the United States in 1998. He justified his request after he alleged having received death threats after publishing his book. The claim was supported by human rights organizations, LGBT activists, and former São Paulo mayor Marta Suplicy.
