type_species_authority =Boisduval , 1836"Catagramma" is an obsolete
genus ofNeotropical butterflies , although the name continues to be used in some circles of butterfly collectors. "Catagramma" species are medium sized (around 5 cm wingspan) forest insects, popularly known as "88s" which number can be seen on the underside of the hindwings.The genus once contained over 100 species. These are now placed in the related genera "
Callicore ", "Catacore ", "Paulogramma ", "Diaethria " and "Perisama ". This is for technical reasons. Boisduval ignored the generic names of previous authors but was widely followed.Frederick DuCane Godman andOsbert Salvin used the name "Catagramma" in the "Biologia Centrali Americana", establishing it for later authors. All of the "Catagramma" butterflies in the plate shown below are properly placed in "Callicore", under the previously used generic name."Catagramma" is, technically, a
junior subjective synonym . Thetype species of "Catagramma" is "Catagramma hydaspes" Boisduval, presently placed in the genus "Callicore " as a probable synonym of "Callicore pygas" (Godart, [1824] ).References
