The Carta d'Identità Elettronica (Italian "Electronic identity card", normally identified with the acronym "CIE"), is a personal identification document that has been planned to replace the currently-issued, paper-based ID card in Italy. The paper-based ID was planned to be replaced effective from January 1 2006, with the new electronic identity card available to be issued upon request at the first issue or renewal of the document.However, the introduction of the CIE has been delayed due to Governmental budgetary constrains, and while the local administrations of the larger metropolitan areas in the Country are equipped to issue this document, the number of CIEs in circulation today is extremely low. Most of italian townships are still today unable to issue CIEs due to the lack of proper equipment, and the final full-scale introduction of the CIE is being delayed year by year, with no known certain date whatsoever.
