- Aufs
Aufs (AnotherUnionFS) is an alternative version of
unionfs , a filesystem service which implements aunion mount forLinux file system s. It has been developed byJunjiro Okajima since early 2006 [ [http://aufs.sourceforge.net/History History of the Aufs project maintened by Junjiro Okajima] ] .It is a complete rewriting of unionfs, with the aim of improving reliability and performance. It has also introduced some new concepts, like writable branch balancing, and many smaller improvements [ [http://aufs.sourceforge.net/ Goals and new features of aufs in the project's homepage] ] . Some of these new ideas are now re-implemented in the unionfs 2.x branch.
Another big difference is that part of unionfs 1.x is currently merged in the
linux kernel (and 2.x in the --mm experimental tree) whereas aufs is not. This is because the author considers that "Aufs is in still development stage" [ [http://aufs.sourceforge.net/ Reference to the development stage and list of things to be fixed] ] .Aufs has been chosen for replacement of unionfs by the
Knoppix live CD Linux distribution since the end of 2006, "for better stability & performance" [ [http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix51-en.html Knoppix release note] explaining the switch from unionfs to aufs.] This file system replaced union fs inSLAX since version 6.Aufs replaced unionfs in
Xandros Linux distribution, availiable in ASUSEee PC model 901.Notes
