UGGT, or (UDP)-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyl transferase is an enzyme resident in the endoplasmic reticulum which is responsible for the transfer of glucose monomers to glycoproteins as part of the quality control system of protein folding. The integral chaperone calnexin has a high affinity for glycosylated nascent polypeptide chains and thus UGGT activity increases the potential for correct folding of the protein in question and escapes the fate of degradation.
