The 2008–09 season was the 112th season in Sunderland A.F.C.'s history, their 106th in The Football League and 104th in the league system of English football.

Overview

Sunderland have signed 3 players from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer season.
Teemu Tainio was the first signing and become Roy Keane's first signing at Sunderland. Two days later they then signed Pascal Chimbonda also from Spurs. Steed Malbranque completed his transfer from Spurs to the Black Cats on the 30th July. These three players were also signed for undisclosed fee's in Keane's attempt to strengthen his defence and midfield. Incidently Younes Kaboul turned down a contract from Sunderland.

Keane also strengthened his strike line with the signing of El-Hadji Diouf from Bolton Wanderers, Djibril Cissé from Marseille on loan and David Healy from Fulham.

Sunderland also signed two defenders from West Ham United. Anton Ferdinand's transfer was confirmed on 27th August. Former Sunderland Captain George McCartney rejoins from West Ham United for an undisclosed fee on the last day of summer transfer window.
