Panzer E100 Panzerkampfwagen

Panzer E100 Panzerkampfwagen

Panzer E100 Panzerkampfwagen (TG-01) was a German super tank developed at the end of WWII.

ignificance

It is the biggest and heaviest tank developed anywhere in the world during WWII.

History

Faced with overwhelming numerical superiority of Allied advance, Germany developed E100. One was found without a turret when allied advanced into Germany. Maus, a sister tank was said to have been developed, but no proof could be found until the iron curtain came down. Russians had captured Maus and it is currently in Kunbinka museum.

Mechanical Design

The engine mounted on Maus and E100 was same engine mounted on King Tiger and Panther tanks, it was grossly under powered. The hull has sloped type armor, typical of post 1943 design. Wheels were overlapped wheels similar to King Tiger and Panther. 128mm or 150mm gun was to be mounted. E100 had the thickest armor of its time. Modern composite armor design made it useless to have such thick armor. As such, tanks will never be that big.
