The method of capital punishment used in Portugal was by hanging. Portugal abolished the death penalty for all crimes except treason in 1867, and for all crimes in 1911. In 1916 it was restablished for treason in war times. In 1976 it was abolished for all crimes.
The last person to be hanged in Portugal was executed in 1846.
