Sanok , Galicia at that time part ofAustria-Hungary . Herzig went to school inBreslau until 1874, started studying chemistry at theUniversity of Vienna but joinedAugust Wilhelm von Hofmann at theUniversity of Berlin in the second semester. He worked witRobert Bunsen at theUniversity of Heidelberg an received his Ph.D for work withLudwig Barth at theUniversity of Vienna . He became lecturer and in 1897 professor at the Universit of Vienna. He died inVienna 1924.Work
