History
"The County of Middlesex Chronicle" was founded towards the end of 1858 by printer George Thomas Thomason. The first issue, of which there is no remaining copy, hit the streets on Saturday, January 1, 1859 and sold 500 copies from just two newsagents in Hounslow and Brentford. [Family business : the story of Thomasons, printers and publishers of the Middlesex Chronicle. / Thomason, Geoffrey Guy. 1973] According to folklore, Mr Thomason celebrated that week with a leg of mutton supper at the Duke of Wellington Inn in Staines Road, Hounslow. On his death in 1899, the paper was passed to his widow Elizabeth and when she died in 1910 her seven children formed a limited company. The Thomason family eventually sold up more than 30 years ago and the paper is now owned by Trinity Mirror plc. The Chronicle, with subtitles The Hounslow Era, Isleworth News and Brentford Advertiser, started life as a broadsheet with a front page of adverts and coverage of foreign, national and county news inside. [Middlesex Chronicle Centenary Supplement] Sales steadily grew over the subsequent decades but circulation soared immediately after the war when paper rationing ended.Demand across the south-western corner of the county saw the launch of editions covering other communities including Feltham, Bedfont and Hanworth, and Twickenham and Whitton. News featured more heavily on the front page and the use of photographs revolutionised the way events were reported.
