This season saw no First Division teams apply for election to the Football League, with Watford relegated despite being above Brentford in the table. They were replaced by Division Two champions Fulham, second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion and newly-elected Plymouth Argyle. In the Second Division the lack of teams meant that the Southern League had to incorporate reserve teams into the Second Division to expand its numbers. Six were accepted into the Division, comprising of teams from First Division Millwall, Swindon Town, Reading, Southampton, Fulham and Portsmouth.
