History
Christ School was founded in 1900 by Thomas and Susan Wetmore. It is an all boys' boarding school seven miles southeast of Asheville, North Carolina. This 500-acre (2.0 km2) campus is home to approximately 249 boys (approximately 179 boarding and about 70 day students), grades 8-12. Students come from 19 different states and 9 different countries.
Christ School is affiliated with the Episcopal Church but receives no funding nor direction from it. All faiths are welcome and represented, including current Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Catholic, as well as numerous Protestant traditions. The community gathers for chapel services three times per week and are required. Also, St Joseph's Chapel is the longest continuously operating Episcopal church in western North Carolina.
Academics
There were 32 Honors classes and 16 Advanced Placement class offered in the 2010-2011 school year. 60% of the faculty live on campus. Class sizes are small which allows for individual attention.
Traditions
Christ School has a historic rivalry with Asheville School and each year the football teams compete for the Fayssoux-Arbogast Trophy which then remains with the winning school until the next year's game. Asheville School Week is filled with spirit activities, skits and a prohibition of any blue clothing.
Athletics & Extracurricular Activities
At Christ School all students are required to participate in sports. There are eleven varsity sports that students can participate in at school: three in the fall (football, soccer, and cross-country), three in the winter (basketball, swimming and wrestling), and five in the spring (track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, and baseball.) Intramurals, drama, and a band program are offered year-round, and there are other student-led groups, including Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a Young Life Fellowship. Students also produce a literary magazine The Struan, the yearbook The Angelus and the school newspaper The Galax Leaf.
Basketball
The Christ School basketball program has been very successful in recent years. Coached by David Gaines , himself a 1984 alumnus of the school, it is the only boys program in the history of Western North Carolina to win five straight state titles in basketball. Since 2005 the Greenies will have sent 16 graduates (including three this fall) to Division I programs.[2] The Christ School basketball team plays its home games in the Mebane Fieldhouse. On the walls inside of the fieldhouse, "The Greenie Dome" is painted on the wall. Many alumni graduate out of Christ School and play for successful college basketball teams like Duke University.
Lacrosse
The Christ School Lacrosse Program was started in 2002 by Head Coach Jeff Miles. Over the years several players have moved on to play college lacrosse for schools such as UNC Chapel Hill, Guilford College, Army Prep, Presbyterian College and Catholic University.
Outdoor Program
The Outdoor Program consists of canoeing, kayaking, climbing, ice climbing, backpacking, mountain boarding and mountain biking. Students may choose to participate in the Outdoor Program as their sport and is available in the fall, winter, and spring.
Ski and Snowboard
Beginning in 2009, Christ School formed a Snow Team that practices at Cataloochee and competes regularly in the Cataloochee Interscholastic School Race League.
Drama
The theater program is led by Ms. Mary Dillon. Recently, she has chosen a wide variety of plays such as You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The plays have done well in regional play competitions, such as the Independent School Theater Festival.
