eponym=Antony van Leeuwenhoek Leeuwenhoek is a lunar
impact crater that lies in theMoon 's southern hemisphere, on the far side from theEarth . It is located to the east of Birkeland crater and the unusual Van de Graaff double crater. To the northeast of Leeuwenhoek is Orlov crater and to the south is the large Leibnitz walled-plain.The outer rim of Leeuwenhoek is worn and eroded, forming an irregular mountainous ring about the relatively level interior floor. The inner wall is wider along the western and southern sides, offseting the floor to the northeast. At the mid-point of the interior is a central peak formation. There are a pair of small craterlets on the floor and several tiny craters. Leeuwenhoek partly overlays the satellite crater 'Leeuwenhoek E' to the northeast.
atellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Leeuwenhoek crater.
